A Rights-Based and Participatory Approach to Learning

This first pillar of the ANPE operational model centers on a rights-based approach, participatory methods, and a commitment to gender equality and inclusion, as outlined in its strategic framework. This methodology is not merely a set of classroom techniques but a comprehensive philosophical stance that challenges the hegemonic structures of traditional schooling.

Rights-Based Framework, SDG 4 Alignment & Lebanese context

The rights-based framework, as adopted by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4), maintains that education is a fundamental human right, universal and non-negotiable, free from discrimination based on race, religion, gender, or socio-economic status. This framework goes beyond mere service delivery to focus on the "legal and social obligations" of the state as the primary duty-bearer. In the Lebanese context, this is operationalized through the "Education Out Loud" project, which aims to make national education policies more responsive to outcomes, making education a right based on human rights and citizenship as a cornerstone.

Participatory Methods

Participatory Methods: "Pedagogy of the Text" (PDT) — the Primary Participatory Methodology used by ANPE

The "Pedagogy of the Text" (PDT) serves as the primary participatory methodology employed by ANPE. Influenced by Freire's Learning to Question, PDT rejects "ready-made" curricula and pre-packaged educational "recipes". Instead, it advocates for a model where the educator functions as a "facilitator" and a fellow learner in a shared search for truth.

The four critical stages of PDT engagement

The mechanism of PDT involves several critical stages of engagement:

Participatory Planning

Learners participate in selecting topics relevant to their daily lives and social struggles.

Text Production

Rather than reading from standardized textbooks, learners are encouraged to write their own texts, reclaiming their voice and self-esteem.

Critical Dialogue

The classroom becomes a space for critical conscientization, where participants question social norms and power structures that contribute to their marginalization.

Autonomous Assessment

Learners participate in designing their own assessment tools, ensuring the evaluation process is as empowering as the learning process itself.

This participatory model has profound implications for social cohesion. By treating the knowledge of professionals, facilitators, and learners as equally important, ANPE fosters a democratic environment that breaks barriers of alienation. In refugee camps and marginalized communities, this methodology acts as a catalyst for "cultural transformation," allowing communities to find appropriate means within their own context to address systemic crises.

ANPE's approach is deeply rooted in a feminist and inclusive perspective that recognizes the intersecting dimensions of discrimination from a comprehensive feminist perspective. Inclusion also extends to persons with disabilities and those affected by psychological trauma.

Gender advocacy, disability rights & Education in Emergencies

The Lebanese Coalition for Education works with specialized non-governmental organizations to ensure quality standards in education are applied to the most vulnerable. This is particularly critical in "Education in Emergencies" (EiE), where the absence of inclusive design can permanently exclude children with disabilities from the learning process. The "Strategic Research Model" further ensures that the specific needs of children with disabilities and marginalized groups are identified through participatory design and community involvement.
